Genealogists can be a bit… quirky. They collect what looks like old junk, slam on the brakes for cemeteries, and can talk for hours at family gatherings about ancestors no one else has ever met. We’re an endearing bunch, but we definitely keep people guessing.
The good news? When it comes to gift-giving, genealogists are surprisingly easy to shop for, especially if you need a great last-minute gift.
Whether you’re scrambling for something meaningful for the genealogist in your life or trying to help your own relatives figure out what on earth to buy you, I’ve rounded up six of the BEST last-minute gifts for genealogists. A perfect choice for the researcher who "has everything"... except unlimited shelf space!
WRITE: Scrivener
One of the most meaningful things we can do as family historians is write our ancestors' stories. And to do that well, you need tools that support both creativity and organization. In my opinion, the best writing tool for genealogists is Scrivener.
Originally developed for novelists and scriptwriters, Scrivener has become a powerhouse for anyone tackling long-form, research-heavy writing. It's a robust content-generation platform that lets you draft, plan, outline, and rearrange your work with ease, all while keeping your sources and notes right at your fingertips.
Many genealogists (myself included!) now rely on Scrivener as their go-to writing environment. It helps researchers organize chapters, timelines, research snippets, transcriptions, images, and notes in a single intuitive workspace. No more juggling multiple documents and windows; Scrivener keeps everything tidy and right where you need it.
And yes… there's an app for that. With the Scrivener mobile app for iOS, you can take your writing projects with you anywhere. It syncs seamlessly with your desktop version, so you can edit a paragraph while waiting at the doctor's office, outline a chapter on your tablet, or jot down a new idea whenever inspiration strikes.
If you want to dive deeper into how Scrivener can transform your genealogy writing workflow, check out my review: Using Scrivener for Family History Writing Projects.
DIGITIZE: ScanMyPhotos
Every day, old reel-to-reel films, videotapes, photos, slides, and negatives are quietly fading—tucked in closets, basements, and attics —slowly deteriorating over time. Digitizing analog media is one of the most important steps a family historian can take to preserve irreplaceable memories. It stops further degradation, creates long-lasting digital copies, and lets you enjoy those moments again.
If you want to help the genealogist or memory-keeper in your life safeguard their family treasures, ScanMyPhotos offers professional digitization services that make the process fast, safe, and incredibly convenient. From photo scanning to film transfers, they handle the delicate work so your loved one can focus on rediscovering family stories.
Short on time? ScanMyPhotos E-Gift Cards make a fantastic last-minute gift. They’re instant, practical, and perfect for anyone with a box (or ten!) of old photos waiting to be digitized.
And don’t forget: you can save up to 50% with promo code GoDigital, making this both a meaningful and budget-friendly option.
ORGANIZE: RootsMagic Software
Genealogists are, shall we say, a little notorious for drowning in paper piles, digital folders, online trees, photos, and cloud documents scattered to the four winds. One of the most Googled phrases in genealogy is literally "How do I organize my genealogy?" (Spoiler: start with these tips.)
With so much information spread across so many different places, a solid genealogy database program isn't just helpful; it’s essential.
That’s where RootsMagic comes in. This award-winning genealogy software makes it remarkably easy to research, organize, document, and share your family history. Whether you're brand new to genealogy or a seasoned professional, RootsMagic provides the structure and tools you need to keep everything in one tidy, searchable place.
I’ve used RootsMagic since 2007, and it remains my go-to program for maintaining clean, well-documented research.
You can download RootsMagic Essentials for free to get a feel for how it works—no commitment required.
And for gifting (or upgrading your own toolbox), you can save up to 50% on RootsMagic 11 for new users or upgrades through 24 December 2025. It’s an affordable, practical, and downright sanity-saving tool for any family historian.
LEARN: Legacy Family Tree Webinars
Family historians love learning. Whether they're just starting out or working at a professional level, genealogists are always looking for ways to sharpen their research skills. If you want to give them a gift that keeps them inspired all year long, look no further than a subscription to Legacy Family Tree Webinars.
Founded by professional genealogist Geoff Rasmussen in 2010, Legacy Family Tree Webinars began as a small, once-a-month live series. It has since evolved into one of the most respected education platforms in our field, a full membership site offering world-class genealogy instruction for researchers at every stage.
With a subscription, your family historian will enjoy on-demand access to the entire archive of more than 2,600+ recorded webinars, presented by 496 expert speakers from around the world. That's decades of genealogical knowledge at their fingertips, plus over 10,000 pages of downloadable syllabi packed with resources, references, and how-to guidance.
It’s a thoughtful, practical gift for anyone looking to build their skills and deepen their understanding of family history research.

SHARE: Storyworth
Writing a family history can feel overwhelming. Storyworth makes the process beautifully simple, helping people capture their memories “one bite at a time.”
Here's how it works: each week, Storyworth emails subscribers a thoughtful question about their lives. They can choose from Storyworth's curated library of prompts or customize their own list by adding, editing, or removing questions. The subscriber replies by email with their story, and Storyworth automatically saves everything, sharing each installment with designated family members along the way.
At the end of the year, Storyworth gathers all those stories and prints them in a professionally bound, archival-quality keepsake book. Families can even order extra copies, making it a perfect gift for siblings, children, and future generations.
I gifted Storyworth to my father a few years ago. Although he was skeptical at first, he ultimately enjoyed the weekly prompts and eventually published his full autobiography. It turned into one of the most meaningful gifts our family has ever shared.
And right now, you can save $15 on a Storyworth subscription through 31 December 2025—a wonderful opportunity to give the gift of preserved memories.

I love all your suggestions. There’s something for everyone in several price ranges. All would be loved by genealogists.
A new Epson scanner is on my wish list this year.
Great post! I have never used Scrivener or RootsMagic; both look really intersting and useful! I have never even heard of Backblaze Online Backup or Storyworth, and I would absolutely love a subscription to Legacy Family Tree Webinars! I had looked into Legacybox before, as I have many old home videos, concerts, parades, dance shows, etc all of my kids and wish I could afford it. This post covered everything from buying guide to different types of products all family historians would love! And, yes, I too have enough “ugly sweaters”! 😉
I’m glad you found it useful, Diane! Nothing against ugly sweaters (I have a few, myself), but there are things we family historians would probably rather have. Happy holidays to you!
