It’s September, and going back to school is on the minds of parents, teachers, and children alike.

In addition, many of us are thinking about our genealogy education goals and making plans to attend upcoming webinars (like the “Webtember” series at Family Tree Webinars ), conferences, and institutes.

Early Education in America

Education was important to many of our ancestors, but not necessarily in the way we might think.

Early American public schools did not focus on “reading, writing, and ‘rithmetic,” but instead taught about religion and the virtues of family and community. Girls were often taught to read, but not to write. And attendance at school wasn’t mandatory in the United States until 1918.1The American Board, “11 Facts About the History of Education in America,” American Board Blog.

So this month, let’s talk about getting “schooled!”
