Ah, 2021.

We had such high hopes for you. After all, 2020 set the bar pretty low, so you had nowhere to go but up, right?

I’ll admit that you definitely had your bright spots. For example, 2020 taught us that quality education could continue in a pandemic via the wonders of Zoom, and 2021, you really ran with that idea. In fact, we were overflowing with opportunities to learn from the comfort of our own homes with just a computer or a smartphone. We didn’t even need to put on pants.

You also had your share of not-so-bright spots. As COVID-19 cases dwindled in the U.S. and around the world, we began cautiously reconnecting with friends and loved ones, as well as venturing out to society meetings and research facilities that had been closed for more than a year. Apparently, you didn’t like that, did you, 2021? “Hey, not so fast there!” you called to us. “Here comes the Delta wave! And how about some Omicron for Christmas?” UGH. What a disappointment.

We were happy to see you… and happy to see you go. Here’s hoping that the door hit you (hard) on the way out.

A Year of Growth & Change

After 13 years of blogging under various labels, I launched Heart of the Family™ on 1 May 2020 with the concept that family history isn’t just a hobby… it’s a lifestyle.

Despite the ups and downs of 2021, we saw tremendous growth in readership, especially after completing a major site redesign in late May. The new design brought increased speed and better organization, and it was a heckuva lot prettier. It also made it possible for me to merge two websites into one, consolidating all branches of my business under one umbrella here at Heart of the Family™. It’s so nice to have everything in one place now!

So without further ado, the following are our top 5 posts of 2021. Also included is a “bonus” post that didn’t quite make the cut into the top 5, but was well-received by the genealogy community. (Pssst, you’ll be able to catch my free webinar on the topic next month at RootsTech Connect. Don’t forget to register!)

I hope you find something useful to enhance your family history life among these posts. If you do, you can easily pin any or all of them to Pinterest to save and read later!

Looking Ahead to 2022

What will 2022 bring? I’m still working out the details. Don’t be surprised if you see another redesign in the not-too-distant future because I’m always trying to make things better around here (yes, I have perfection issues).

That said, I do have some big plans in store for the next couple of years, but all will be revealed in good time, I promise!

I want to WELCOME any and all of you who are new to the Heart of the Family™ community. I invite you to subscribe to our weekly emails, join our Facebook group, or send us a message to say hello. If there is anything in particular that you’d like to see here on the blog, I would love to hear about it!

Let’s all make 2022 an amazing and productive family history year!

  1. Yes, I definitely “ran” with the idea of learning from the comfort of my own home during the pandemic, and sometimes didn’t put on pants either, haha! The pandemic has it’s drawbacks, but I was able to start my family history and genealogy blog, and try to promote my business, which I never did before; it was just there, doing nothing, haha! I was able to do more presentations, since there were more offered virtually. I was also now able to join a tremendous amount of genealogy events, lectures and classes, which I did not have much time for before! Too bad I didn’t catch on to any of this until half way through though; I could have had way more opportunities!
Thanks for the post on fire insurance maps! This is something I have not used yet, but see how useful they can be!
Thanks for the Irish resources post! I use most of them already, but was unaware of Logainm.ie!
